Thank you for taking a moment to read the year 7 information page, I would like to introduce myself, Miss Kirsty Phillips, as Head of Year 7 and also the Head of History. I have been a head of year for the past 8 years. There are currently 151 pupils in year 7, with 6 form entry. All pupils study a broad based curriculum. In Bryn Hafren, every Head of Year starts with year 7 and has the opportunity to lead the year group throughout their academic life, from year 7 to year 11. Our Team:
Mrs Alexandra Downey (Head of Drama)
Mrs Michelle Davies (Physical Education)
Miss Gemma Price (Philosophy & Religion)
Mrs Susan Hooper (Head of Food Technology)
Miss Danielle Diver (Food Technology)
Miss Jade Hodgson (Maths)
Mrs Ann O’Connor and Miss Tracey Evans -
Year 7 pupils are rewarded for 100% attendance every week in assembly and again at the end of each half term. Any forms who achieve 100% attendance for five days in a row with no lates, are rewarded with an own clothes day. Whole forms are also awarded ‘form of the half term’ linked to their performance in attendance as a group. As a team we promote attendance as this will be the key to our pupils’ success as they grow and flourish in supportive surroundings. Pupils can also track their own attendance weekly and record this in their planners. All pupils are encouraged to achieve 97% attendance or above.
Praise, recognition and support
We focus on very high standards in year 7 and high expectations for behaviour and engagement with learning. One pupil from each form is nominated as ‘pupil of the half term’ by their Form Tutor. One pupil from each form is also selected if they have 100% attendance. These pupils are recognised in special assemblies and are awarded a small gift. Pupils are also celebrated at the end of the academic year in a presentation evening to celebrate their academic achievements throughout the year. This is one of the highlights of the year. Pupils also have an opportunity to take part in literacy and numeracy challenges and are encouraged to participate in these activities during school holidays and throughout the academic year. Pupils in year 7 are encouraged to attend extra curriculum clubs and activities, these clubs are run at lunch time and after school and range from academic activities to performing arts and sporting activities.
Pupils are encouraged to contribute to school life through their form and Parliament representatives, who sit on the year council. Year 7 pupils are supported and nurtured by their form tutors through monitoring and mentoring. Pupils can access extra support through the Pastoral Support Officers and ELSA support groups, breakfast clubs, reading clubs and learning support and Head of Year meetings. Year 7 are also supported by the Communities First Transition Officer, Holly Morgan. We pride ourselves on creating a positive atmosphere of belonging and inclusion for all pupils and value the importance of developing academic, emotional and social skills. As a Head of Year 7 I work closely with all other Heads of Years, we pride ourselves on the pastoral support offered to all pupils at Bryn Hafren and this has been recognised as excellent in ESTYN school inspections.
