Year 9

Thank you for taking a moment to read the year 9 information page, I would like to introduce myself - Mr Jonathan Coombs, as Head of Year 9 and a teacher of Drama and Performing Arts, I have been a Head of Year for the past 9 years. There are currently 156 pupils in year 8, with a 6 form entry. The team consists of myself and 6 form tutors and a Pastoral Support officer.

Attendance initiatives

Year 9 pupils are rewarded for 100% attendance in assemblies each half term. Forms are encouraged in an inter form attendance competition themed around the characters from T.V.’s Doctor Who. Whole forms are also awarded ‘form of the half term’ linked to their performance in attendance as a group. As a team we promote attendance as this will be the key to our pupils’ success as they grow and flourish in supportive surroundings. Pupils can also track their own attendance weekly and record this in their tutorial booklets. All pupils are encouraged to achieve 97% attendance or above.

Praise, recognition and support

We focus on very high standards in year 9 and high expectations for behaviour and engagement with learning. Two pupils are selected each half term who have been nominated by their peers as “pupil of the half term” and “pupil with 100% attendance”. These pupils are recognised in special assemblies and are awarded a small gift. Pupils are also celebrated at the end of the academic year in a presentation evening to celebrate their academic achievements throughout the year. This is one of the highlights of the year. Pupils also have an opportunity to take part in literacy and numeracy challenges and are encouraged to participate in these activities during school holidays and throughout the academic year. This year pupils in year 9 have continued to follow the accelerated reading programme. Pupils in year 9 are encouraged to attend extra curriculum clubs and activities, these clubs are run at lunch time and after school and range from the academic, performing arts and sporting activities, last term 50% of year 9 pupils attended an extra curriculum sporting activity. Pupils in year 9 have the opportunity to take part in the ‘whole school’ production in January at the Memo Arts centre, an exciting opportunity to perform and work in a professional venue.

Pupils also organise and present a class assembly to the whole year group once every half term.

Pupils are encouraged to contribute to school life through the year council, every class has a member on the year council and then 3 year 9 pupils represent us on the school parliament. Year 9 pupils are supported and nurtured by their form tutors through monitoring and mentoring and through the Pastoral Support Officers who run ELSA support groups ELEVATE, breakfast clubs, reading clubs and learning support and Head of Year meetings and mentoring. It is a very busy year, as during this academic year pupils will choose their options for GCSE subjects.

We pride ourselves on creating a positive atmosphere of belonging and inclusion for all pupils and value the importance of developing academic, emotional and social skills. As a Head of Year 9 I work closely with all other Heads of Years, we pride ourselves in the pastoral support offered to all pupils at Bryn Hafren and this has been recognised as excellent in ESTYN school inspections.
