Bryn Hafren Comprehensive School aims to provide a curriculum that equips pupils with the knowledge, understanding and skills for life, work and leisure in the 21st century. We provide varied, challenging and enjoyable learning experiences which meet the needs and interests of the pupils in Barry and those of individual learners. The curriculum is flexible and responds to trends in education and provides both breadth and balance; allowing all pupils to follow accredited courses which lead to recognized qualifications. It is inclusive providing equality of access to all pupils in KS3 and KS4.

The tutorial programme at all key stages supports the delivery of the curriculum by aiming to equip pupils with the attitudes and skills needed to help them to maximize potential. All pupils have access to a mentor and have personal target setting and review interviews on a regular basis. There is a wide programme of curriculum enrichment activities and extra-curricular clubs and events.

At KS3 the curriculum is planned with the following principles in mind:

 The provision of a broad , balanced curriculum  in keeping with National Curriculum orders

 Parity of esteem between subject areas in terms of curriculum time allocation across the Key stage

Lessons are delivered in a mixed ability context with the exception of English and Maths (setting from year 7 onwards) and Science (setting from year 9). In-class support, targeted extraction and differentiated learning and teaching allow access to the full curriculum by all pupils. Skills development is an important cross- curricular theme throughout all key stages.

At KS4 the curriculum is planned in the context of the 14 – 19 Learning Pathways agenda and National Curriculum requirements. Pupils follow a core curriculum of English, Maths, Science, RE, Welsh, PE and Welsh Baccalaureate. In addition pupils are able to choose four further subjects from an exceptionally wide options menu consisting of creative, practical, performance and technology subjects, languages, humanities, triple science and a very wide range of vocational courses. We provide a wide range of possible learning pathways and the options are open to all pupils regardless of ability.

At KS5 the partnership with Barry Comprehensive School allows us to offer the Sixth Formers of Barry the maximum choice possible and a very wide range of subjects to  study at AS,  A level or BTEC. In addition all students follow the Welsh Baccalaureate course.
