Sociology is an option that can be taken at both KS4 and KS5. The subject has a high intake of students at both key stages and can lead to a wide-ranging number of exciting careers. Sociology is an excellent subject for those pupils who are interested in their own culture and society as well as the world around them. The way in which Sociology is studied at both key stages is varied and dynamic and offers the pupils the opportunity to challenge both their understanding of the wider world and themselves.

Staff List

Mr P Birch

Sociology at GCSE follows the WJEC specifications. It is becoming increasingly popular at GCSE and the intake is increasing year on year. This is a mixed ability group and no previous sociological knowledge is required at KS4. The pupils use a wide variety of sources to enhance their understanding of the subject matter. They are able to take their first GCSE examination in Year 10. In sociology in Year 10, the pupils study People, Research Methods and Family. For Year 11, the pupils study Crime and Deviance, Research Methods and Inequality within society. They can then sit their second GCSE examination at the end of Year 11.

Sociology follows the WJEC specification and is extremely popular at AS level. The students do not need to have studied Sociology previously as the course gives an overview of Sociology and sociological understanding. At AS level the students study an Introduction to Sociology, Youth Culture, Research Methods and Education. In Year 13, for A level, the students study Crime and Deviance, Research Methods and Inequality. Sociology is a solely examination based subject.
